Supporting Community Structures to take preventive measures and Creating Awareness on COVID-19 in Montserrado County, Liberia


The Corona Virus broke out in Liberia on March 16, 2020 and has since taken away 5 lives, and there are a total of 73 reported cases currently in the Country (MoH & NPHIL). Despite the strenuous measures put in place by the Government of Liberia to curtail the spread of this deadly virus; economic hardship is on the high increase since the outbreak of the virus in the country. Studies suggest that the target communities of Districts 1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11, in Montserrado County, have a population of over 200,000 inhabitants with above 50% being vulnerable people including women and children. As established by the baseline survey conducted for this project, these Districts currently are the most affected by the outbreak, most slum communities and vulnerable woman, children, youth, and people living with disabilities.

Project Description

Youth Network for Positive Change is currently responding to COVID-19 by setting up Community Task Force mainly to help the Government in tracking would be visitors and strange movement of persons within the community. These Task Force members work along with their supervisors who coordinate the activities of the group. The title of this project is: Supporting Community Structures to take preventive measures and creating awareness on COVID-19 in Montserrado County.

The objectives of this project are:

  • To engage citizens by create awareness in communities and making sure residents are following preventative measure;

  • To keep track on every citizens by establishing a data system to assist the Ministry of Health (MoH) and National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) in contact tracing in case of outbreak;

  • To providing assistance (preventative measures materials to vulnerable communities );

  • To establish, train and support community task force;

  • To eradicate stereotypes surrounding the COVID-19 in Liberia.

Outcomes: At the end of this project, it is expected that this intervention will result into the following outcomes:

  • Messages of COVID-19 will reached citizens in the targeted communities (woman, children, men , people living with disabilities) ;

  • Establish Community Task Force who will support efforts in post COVID-19 era;

  • Citizens will have access to preventative measures materials to enable safety;

  • Citizens will have a positive view of following preventative measures and eradicating stereotypes surrounding the COVID-19 in Liberia.

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENT:

This project has been able to achieve the following during its phase one implementation: Sensitization of the communities on COVID-19, training of field workers, meeting community leaders and setting up of community task force(s) have already been implemented during the phase one of this project.

Once funds are secured, the following will be executed in the phase two (2) of this project:

  1. Distribution of hygienic materials: hand washing buckets, nose mask, hand sanitizer, and food items such as rice, oil etc to vulnerable woman and children in the project targeted locations.

  2. Setting up citizen’s tracking and data system for contract tracing

PROJECT LOCATION AND TARGETED BENEFICIARIES: The primary beneficiaries and targeted locations of this project are 1500 vulnerable people consisting of woman and children in district 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, of Montserrado County, Liberia.


How is this project reducing the impact of the Covid-19 crisis? This project reduces the impact of the COVID-19 Crisis because:

  1. A massive awareness is being carryout

  2. Vulnerable people are being supply with all necessary personal preventive measures items such as: Nose Mask, Hand Sanitizers, Hand Washing Buckets, etc

  3. Tracking people movement to ease contact tracing

Partners We currently do not have a specific donor partner for this project. We were able to implement the phase one of this project through a fund raiser initiative launched called: One Dollar Campaign. We have an implementing partner organization is called: Image Liberia.


Support

The total funds needed for the successful implementation of this project is $6000.00USD. We were able to successfully raised the total amount of $1000.00USD through a fund raiser initiative called "One Dollar Campaign". This process helped us to successfully implement the phase one of this project which included: Training and setting up of Community Task Force(s), Meeting Community Leaders, and Creating Awareness in Communities. Phase two of this project will include: Distribution of hygienic materials; hand washing buckets, nose mask, hand sanitizer, and food items such as rice, oil etc to vulnerable woman and children in the project targeted locations, Setting up citizen’s tracking and data system for contract tracing
